Greenville Utilities has seen an increase in reports from customers who are receiving calls from scammers, some of whom are not only spoofing a Greenville Utilities phone number and ID but also using a recording of GUC’s phone messaging system when customers return the phone call. This makes it appear to be GUC in the caller ID as well as the recording upon calling back the listed phone number.
The callers claim that your utilities are about to be cut off if you don’t make a payment right away, a scam that typically pops up several times per year. If you receive a call like this, hang up. Greenville Utilities will not call and threaten to cut off your utilities if you don’t pay right away. GUC will also not call offering a discount and asking for personal information.
Last week, GUC received notice from the Greenville Police Department of another scam tactic, this one related to solar energy sales. Residents have reported that people who appear to be selling solar panels are claiming to work for or with Greenville Utilities. Whether this is a legitimate company or a scam, GUC does not sell solar panels to customers for their personal use or for home installation, nor does GUC endorse or work with specific companies. Someone showing up unannounced and claiming to be a GUC employee - or doing work on behalf of GUC and asking for money up front – are just a couple of the many red flags to be aware of for a potential scam.
If you have questions about calls you get claiming they are from GUC, DO NOT give them your personal information or a payment of any kind over the phone hang up and call GUC's main number at 252-752-7166 during regular business hours.
