Part of Greenville Utilities’ mission is to provide our reliable utility solutions in an environmentally responsible manner. One of the ways we do that is through ensuring a mix of environmentally-friendly sources for our energy.
In the past 20 years, our energy provider has reduced carbon emissions 48%. Roughly 51% of GUC’s power now comes from nuclear sources. The use of coal has been reduced to under 9% while cleaner-burning natural gas plants now create about 38% of our electricity. While our energy provider uses the credit for the energy it creates via renewable sources in other areas (hence GUC does not get credit for receiving so-called "green" energy), GUC does purchase renewable energy credits in order to meet the state mandate of 10% of our energy mix.
It can be a delicate balance to ensure we have reliable, affordable, and clean energy, but we believe it is important to do so and will continue to do what we can for a clean future.
