Greenville Utilities has reported a wastewater spill that was discovered at 10:25 a.m. on August 5, 2021. The incident was the result of a contractor that caused an overflow of a manhole at the intersection of Pine and Millbrook Streets. As a result, approximately 7,500 gallons of wastewater spilled into Green Mill Run, a tributary of the Tar River.
GUC responded immediately to the call, successfully ending the spill by 11:15 a.m. The area adjacent to the manhole, as well as affected areas downstream, were treated with a chlorine solution. In accordance with regulatory requirements, the Division of Water Quality was notified of the spill.

The North Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation in July 1999, requiring municipalities, animal operations, industries and others who operate waste handling systems to issue news releases when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters. Spills of 15,000 gallons may require both a news release and a public notice.
