Commissioner Joel Butler is the President of the Vidant Medical Center and Vidant Health Foundations. As President he directs all aspects of the Foundation’s activities to ensure adequacy of overall mission, objectives, policies and plans, and is responsible for all matters relating to general business activities in collaboration as Board of Trustees. Mr. Butler is also Chief External Affairs Officer at Vidant Health (VH). In that capacity, he coordinates and supports external activities and community programs in the many venues served by VH. He works collaboratively with VH regional hospital presidents to foster institutional trust and to convey a positive image. Mr. Butler is also responsible for government relations activities and advocacy for VH. His role requires active community and regional engagement and productive relationships with elected officials of all levels
Prior to his role as Chief External Affairs Officer and President, VH/VMC Foundations, Mr. Butler spent 10 years as a Vice President at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Before moving to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in 1989, he was Financial Controller at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC.
Commissioner Butler’s community activities include President of Access East (provides access to care for the under-served population), First Citizens Bank Community Board, and Eastern Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Board of Directors. He has also served on the East Carolina University Board of Trustees, Global TransPark Board of Directors, North Carolina Chamber Board and as Past Chairman of the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, as well as many other boards and commissions.
Mr. Butler graduated from Oakwood College (Huntsville, AL) in 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from East Carolina University in 1998.
