Freeboot Friday
GUC participated in Freeboot Friday twice this fall. Uptown Greenville coordinates Freeboot Fridays on the even of ECU home football games. We provided bucket truck rides and a prize wheel for Freebooters.

A Time for Science
GUC Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant staff shared interactive activities with over 1,000 children and adults in Uptown Greenville during the A Time for Science Expo on November 21st. 

Operators Visit Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater Treatment Plant employees hosted the Eastern Professional Wastewater Operators Committee meeting on November 12th.

Pirate Football
GUC was on-hand at the November 2nd ECU football game to show our support for the ECU Pirates. We handed out promotional items highlighting our Emergency Hotline.

Pitt Community College Building Design
Jim Rapin (Energy Services) met with Pitt Community College students on November 19th. He used a blower door test to demonstrate the air flow in a new home that was built by the students.

Fall Festival
GUC provided bucket rides for the City of Greenville's Fall Festival on October 21st.

ECU Career Fair
GUC participated in the ECU Career Fair on October 7th. Representatives from our IT, HR, and Electric Departments met with future graduates about career opportunities at GUC.

Girl Scouts
Energy Services' Jonathan Sergeant met with Girl Scouts Troop 11 in October to share information about energy efficiency.

American Institute of Building Design
Jim Rapin, Energy Services, spoke to the local chapter of the American Institute of Building Design in October about energy effcient programs, like GUC's E-300 program, and Energy Star along with NC Energy Building Codes. 

Forklift Rodeo
GUC assisted Pitt Community College, NACCO, and the Greenville-Pitt Chamber of Commerce with the 3rd annual Forklift Rodeo competition on October 9th. The event emphasizes forklift safety. Stores employees Mike Carmon, Blake Jones, and William Tyson were judges, and Safety Office employee Kelly Smith assisted with set up.

STRIVE
Energy Services' Dan Oglesby met with STRIVE participants in September to share ways participants could save on their home energy costs.

ECU Merchants Fair
GUC joined with other local merchants for the Greenville-Pitt Chamber of Commerce ECU Merchants Fair on September 3rd.

Pitt Community College Career Fair
Human Resources employees Elyse Smith and Kathy Pate represented GUC at the Pitt Community College Career Fair on August 26th. 

Council on Aging
General Manager/CEO Tony Cannon spoke to the "Seniors on the Move" group at the Pitt County Council on Aging on July 15th.

Love A Sea Turtle Camp
Campers from Love a Sea Turtle camp visited the Wastewater Treatment Plant  on July 15th. Click here for more details and photos.

Fan Donation
For 22 years, GUC has donated fans for those in need during the hot summer months. The tradition continued on June 25th. Click here for more, and a picture.

Lab Technology Day
Emily Barnes (Public Information) gave a presentation on crisis communications to a group of water treatment professionals at the NC Waterworks Operators Association's Lab Technology Day in Raleigh on May 5th.

 

M/WBE Mix 'N Meet
GUC employees met with potential vendors during the 7th Annual Minority and/or Women-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) Mix 'N Meet event at the Greenville City Hall on April 28th. The M/WBE Program is a joint venture launched by the City of Greenville and GUC to provide minority and women-owned businesses equal opportunity to work with us. 

Touch A Truck
GUC was on-hand for the Junior Women's Association's annual Touch A Truck event on April 25th. 

A Time for Science
GUC participated in the Earth Day celebration held at A Time for Science Nature and Science Learning Center in Ayden on April 25th.

Neuse River Guardians Environmental Symposium
GUC participated in the inaugural Neuse River Guardians Environmental Symposium at River Park North on April 20th. Over 200 students from six Eastern North Carolina counties attended the event.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Open House
In honor of Earth Day, our Wastewater Treatment Plant held an open house on April 20th. Visitors were able to tour the facility, see lab and garden demos, and take home compost made by the company that uses dewatered biosolids from the dewatering facility at the plant.

 

Eastern Elementary School
GUC participated in Eastern Elementary School's outdoor career fair and "touch a truck" event on April 15th. Jeffrey Williams and Jason Smith from the Electric Department, William Morning and Justin Oaks from the Gas Department and John Hart from Water Resources represented GUC at the event.

Damage Prevention Breakfast
The Annual Contractor Awareness/Damage Prevention Breakfast & Seminar was held at GUC on April 14th. This event is sponsored by the Pitt County Utilities Coordinating Committee, which is comprised of NC811, CenturyLink, Suddenlink, the City of Greenville, and Greenville Utilities.

PirateFest
GUC particpated in PirateFest on April 11th. We provided bucket truck rides and an informational booth.

Business Expo
GCU had a booth at the Greenville-Pitt Chamber of Commerce Business Expo on April 8th. 

Lakeforest Elementary School
Kay Spriggs (HR) and Jeffrey Clemmons (Water Resources) met with students at the Lakeforest Elementary Career Fair on April 2nd.

G.R. Whitfield School
On March 18th, students from G. R. Whitfield visited the Water Treatment Plant and Julius Phillips led them on a tour of the facility. On March 27th, Durk Dyson (Gas Department) represented GUC at the school's annual Career Fair.

ECU Career Networking Event
Lin Hall (IT Department) and Kevin Hardee (Wastewater Treatment Plant) shared information with ECU students during ECU's main Career Networking event on March 19th.

ECU Off Campus Housing Fair
Linda Clark and Emily Barnes (Public Information) represented GUC at the ECU Off-Campus Housing Fair on March 25th. This annual event provides students who are getting ready to move off campus for the first time information to make the transition a smooth one. 

Homebuilder's Homefest
Jonathan Sergeant and Jim Rapin (Energy Services) represented GUC at the Greenville-Pitt County Homebuilders Association Homefest on March 7th. 

Greenville Golden Kiwanis Club
Dan Oglesby (Energy Services) shared information about keeping heating costs down and water conservation tips with the Greenville Gold Kiwanis Club in March.

ECU Communications Career Fair
Public Information Specialist Emily Barnes represented GUC at the ECU School of Communications Career Fair on February 28th.

Belvoir Elementary
Rita Johnson (Water Treatment Plant) and Carol Dunn (Finance Department) shared educational and career information with students at Belvoir Elementary on February 19th.

English as a Second Language Class
Jim Rapin, with the Energy Services section, visited Pitt Community College on February 5th to show students in the English as a Second Language class how to conserve energy in their homes and how to read their GUC bills.

Water Treatment Plant Tour
A group of homeschool students toured the Water Treatment Plant on January 29th. 

Children's Montessori
Gas employees visited with preschoolers at Children's Montessori in Greenville on January 22nd. They delighted the kids with equipment and safety demonstrations. Photo

Veterans Job Fair
Greenville Utilities participated in the Pitt County Veterans Job Fair on January 12th. Jeffery Clemons, Pipe Layer II in the Water Resources Department, and Kathy Pate, Customer Records Clerk in the Electric Department, shared GUC career information with participants at the Job Fair. Photo

2014:

Operation Santa Claus
This year GUC participated in Operation Santa Claus for the 8th year in a row. Operation Santa Claus is a partnership of 34 years between the Salvation Army and the Pitt County Department of Social Services to provide toys for children who would otherwise not have any presents under the tree on Christmas. GUC was lucky to have a special visit from Santa Claus himself on December 7th. GUC families were able to have their picture taken with Ol' Saint Nick while contributing to a good cause at the same time.  Photos

Holiday Giving
Several groups of employees took on holiday fundraising projects. The Electric Department held their annual oyster roast to raise money for three local families in need. The Water Resources Department adopted a family with four children whose names they received from the Salvation Army. The Finance Department collected funds to donate to the Domestic Violence Center and the Pitt County Council on Aging. GUC also participated in the Young Professionals of Pitt County Eastern Carolina Fall Food Drive. In addition, we had a float in the Jaycee's Annual Christmas Parade.  Photos

Holly Jolly Trolley
GUC partnered with Uptown Greenville and The Daily Reflector to present the second annual Holly Jolly Trolley Holiday Lights Tour. Riders were able to travel on a trolley to see Greenville's most festive holiday lights and displays. Proceeds of the tours benefit Newspapers in Education and GUC's Neighbor to Neighbor program. Elmhurst Elementary
Overhead Lineworkers Mike McGowan and Earl Harris were on hand to help Elmhurst Elementary with their Annual Career Day on November 19th.  Photo

ECU School of Communications
Emily Barnes, Public Information Specialist, gave presentations to two ECU School of Communications classes in November. She shared information about her career path and responsibilities as part of GUC's Public Information team, as well as GUC's strategic communications plan. 

ECU Football
GUC was on hand at the October 4th ECU Football game against SMU to hand out Pirate themed GUC promotional items. 

The Bellamy Student Apartments
Jonathan Sergeant, Energy Services Officer, gave a presentation on energy saving tips for residents at The Bellamy Student Apartments on October 28th.

Cambridge Homeowners Association
Energy Services Officer Dan Oglesby shared energy tips at the Cambridge Homeowners Association meeting on October 25th.

Fall Festival
Greenville Utilities provided bucket truck rides during the City of Greenville's first annual Fall Festival on October 18th. 

T-Shirts for a Cause
At the two Lineman Rodeos GUC employees competed in this spring, they also sold special pink shirts they had designed to raise money for breast cancer awareness. They were able to donate $854 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Photo

ECU Career Fair
GUC participated in the ECU Career Fair on October 16th to meet with new graduates about employment opportunities. Photo

Construction Career Days
Staff from several GUC departments participated in the two-day Construction Career Days event on October 8th and 9th. Approximately 2,000 high school students attended the event to learn about various careers in construction.  Photo

First Free Will Baptist Church
Dan Oglesby, Energy Services Officer, shared energy and water conservation information with the Layman's League Men's meeting at First Free Will Baptist Church on September 30th.

Freeboot Friday
Greenville Utilities was on-hand at Freeboot Friday on September 19th and October 3rd, providing bucket truck rides and prizes for Freebooters gearing up for ECU home football games. 

Unicorn Club
Dan Oglesby, Energy Services Officer, spoke at the Unicorn Club, a group of Burroughs-Wellcome retirees, on September 18th. He gave tips on energy and water conservation.

Forklift Rodeo
GUC assisted Pitt Community College, Overton's and the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce at the second annual Forklift Rodeo competition on September 12th. The event is designed to emphasize forklift safety and three GUC employees served as judges. 

Senior Wellness Fair
Energy Services staff represented Greenville Utilities at the Senior Wellness Fair held at the Aquatics and Fitness Center on September 10th. 

ECU Merchant's Fair
Greenville Utilities participated in the ECU Merchant Fair sponsored by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce on September 4th. This annual event gives students an opportunity to see what our local businesses have to offer them. Photo

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
GUC raised $2,360 for ALS research. At Freeboot Friday on August 29th, General Manager/CEO Tony Cannon graciously took a 55-gallon dousing of ice cold, purple water poured from a bucket truck. Video

PCC Career Fair
HR Staff Support Specialists Kay Spriggs and Mashan Arthur met with students at the Pitt Community College Career Fair on August 28th. 

Veterans Job Fair
Harold Jones, Substation/Controls Engineering Assistant, and Kay Spriggs, HR Staff Support Specialist, shared GUC career information with participants at the Pitt County Veterans Job Fair on July 28th. 

Pitt Community College Tour
A Pitt Community College Environmental Biology Class toured our Water Treatment Plant on July 1st. 

Habitat for Humanity
Greenville Utilities partnered with Habitat for Humanity in July to build an energy efficient home through our E-300 Program. Photo

Fan Donation
For the 22nd consecutive year, GUC donated 100 fans to the Council on Aging and Department of Social Services for distribution to those who need them during the hot summer months. Photo

ECU Summer Science Camp
Greenville Utilities participated in a summer science camp on June 17th. Energy Services Officer Jonathan Sergeant shared water conservation and energy efficiency information with a group of 4th and 5th graders. Photo

River Jam
GUC participated in the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation's River Jam event at the Greenville Town Commons on June 14th. Participants got a bird's eye view of Greenville in bucket truck rides. 

Strive/Flip Program
Energy Services Officer Dan Oglesby taught a life skills session about saving energy for young mothers as part of the Strive/Flip Program at the Third Street Community Center in May, June, August and November.

Wintergreen Primary School
Jason Harmon, Electric Meter Specialist, visited a first grade class at Wintergreen Primary School on May 8th to share information about how to "play it safe" around electricity. 

Greater Greenville Kiwanis
Energy Services Officer, Dan Oglesby, spoke at the April 30 meeting of the Greater Greenville Kiwanis. He shared energy saving trips and information about Energy Services offerings.

Ayden Elementary School
Ryan Hardee, Underground Electric Crew Leader, and Kelly Mayo, Electric Engineering Assistant II, visited Ayden Elementary School on April 16th. They gave a presentation on how electricity works and demonstrated safety precautions using the Power Town display. Photo.

Energy Services staff represented GUC at Pitt Community College's  Earth Day Fair on April 16th.

PirateFest
For the second year in a row, GUC joined with other community groups for Uptown Greenville's annual PirateFest on April 12th. We offered bucket truck rides and shared energy saving tips. Photo.

University Manor Student Housing
Dan Oglesby, Energy Services Officer, provided a energy and water conservation workshop for residents at University Manor Student Housing on April 8th.

Damage Prevention Breakfast

Greenville Utilities joined with area businesses at the 2014 Pitt County Business Expo on April 3rd. This annual event at the Greenville Convention Center gives residents an opportunity to explore the wide variety of businesses that serve Greenville-Pitt County. Photo.

Ashton Apartments
Energy Services Officer Dan Oglesby  gave a presentation on energy and water conservation to the senior residents at Ashton Apartments on April 1st.

Junior Achievement
GUC staff is volunteering with the Junior Achievement (JA) Program this spring. JA is a 6-week program that is volunteer driven, educating students on economics of life such as budgeting and career building. Click here to find out more about JA. Photo.

E-Tracker
Greenville Utilities is offering the E-Tracker program to an AP Environmental Science class at D.H. Conley High School. E-Tracker is a unique, 30-day program designed by ElectriCities of North Carolina that educates high school students about energy use at their home. Click here for more details about E-Tracker. STEM Video Project
GUC employees are part of a video project about STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) that focuses on the skills and education required to do their jobs. The videos will be used in Pitt County Schools, as well as schools across the United States. Photo.

Off Campus Housing Fair
GUC participated in the Off Campus Housing Fair at East Carolina University on March 24th. This annual event gives students who are planning to move off campus an opportunity to find out about local housing resources. Click here for information just for students.Photo.

Neighbor to Neighbor Contribution
GUC’s Neighbor to Neighbor program received a $12,500 donation from the Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church. They raised the funds through their annual taste-testing luncheon and bake sale.This is the twelfth year in a row the Presbyterian Women have supported our Neighbor to Neighbor fund, and with GUC’s match, they are responsible for raising $191,500. NC Works Veteran Job Fair
Human Resources staff Kay Spriggs and Angie Fuller represented GUC at the NC Works Veteran Job Fair in January. They shared employment opportunities with local veterans searching for new careers in Eastern North Carolina.

Andy Yakim, Energy Services Supervisor, made monthly appearances on the Greenville Grapevine radio show. He shares a variety of information about Greenville Utilities and energy saving tips. (2013)

Operation Santa 2013
For the seventh year in a row, GUC received a visit from Santa! His visit was part of our continuing participating in Operation Santa Claus, a partnership between The Salvation Army and the Pitt County Department of Social Services, that provides donated toys to families in need. (12/13)

GUC Departments Show Christmas Spirit
Several GUC Departments got together to spread holiday cheer this year. The Electric Department held its annual oyster roast to raise money for two local families in need. The Water Resources Department adopted two families this year whose names they received from The Salvation Army. The Finance Department collected money and donated to the Domestic Violence Center and the Pitt County Council on Aging. Gas Department staff helped spearhead GUC's participation in the Young Professionals of Pitt County's Eastern Carolina Fall Food Drive. Over 250 pounds of food was collected and donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. (12/13)

STEM Program
GUC represented the 'hero' side of a "Vilians & Heroes in the Battle for Clean Water" event hosted by the local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) program. The topic for the meeting was coastal toxicology and it was held at StarLight Cafe. (11/13)

The Providence
Energy Services provided informational program on energy conservation for ECU students who live at The Providence student housing complex. (11/13)

Belvoir Elementary School Career Fair
Meter Technician Ivey Green and Water Treatment Plant Laboratory Technician Cheryl Irwin represented GUC at the Belvoir Elementary School Career Fair. (11/13)

DSM Health, Safety and Environment Fair
Greenville Utilities participated in DSM Pharmaceuticals' annual Health, Safety and Environment vendor fair. (11/13)

ECU Lifelong Learning Program
Energy Services staff provided two sessions on energy and water conservation for the ECU Lifelong Learning Program. This is the third year we have participated in this program. (10/13)

Key Accounts Luncheon
GUC hosted a luncheon for our industrial Key Accounts. Information about GUC updates and energy saving information was shared. (10/13)

Construction Career Fair
Employees from the Water Resources and Gas Departments spoke with first and third graders at North West Elementary School. They took a few GUC trucks and equipment to give students examples of how these types of tools are used in construction work. (10/13)

Rebuild Together Pitt County
Energy Services provided informational table for the Rebuild Together Pitt County program held at the Inter-generational Center. (10/13)

Senior Health Fair
GUC participated in the Senior Health Fair at the Greenville Aquatics and Fitness Center. We had a booth with energy and water conservation information. (10/13)

Freeboot Fridays

Construction Career Days
GUC employees participated in Construction Career Days at the Pitt County Fair Grounds. Approximately 1,500 Eastern NC students attend this annual event to get information and hands-on experience from construction-related professionals. Staff from our Electric, Water Resources, and Natural Gas departments demonstrated the variety of vehicles and tools used in their daily work. Minority Enterprise Development Week
GUC, along with the City of Greenville, sponsored activities for the Minority Enterprise Development Week, September 15 - 21. Events throughout the week recognized the contributions of minority and women business owners to the growth of our local economy. (9/13)

4-H All-Stars
Dail Booth, Water Treatment Plant Operator, gave a presentation to the 4-H All-Stars group. He shared information about GUC's water treatment process, gave a demonstration and answered questions. (8/13)

ECU Merchants Fair
GUC participated in the ECU Merchants Fair on August 29th. This annual event is sponsored by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce and gives students an opportunity to see what local businesses have to offer them. (8/13)

Committee of 100
General Manager/CEO Tony Cannon was recently elected as Vice Chair of the Committee of 100, a not-for-profit organization that provides a network of support for economic development throughout Pitt County. Tony began serving on their board in 2012. (7/13)

Fans Donation
For the 21st consecutive year, GUC donated 100 fans to the Council on Aging and Department of Social Services for distribution to those who need them during the hot summer months. (7/13)

Blood Drive
GUC employees donated 101 viable pints of blood during a recent two-day American Red Cross Blood drive. (6/13)

Junior Achievement
Four GUC employees assisted Pitt County Schools by volunteering for Junior Achievement, a non-profit organization that educates students about the economies of life through hands-on programs. Stan Ruffin, Dail Booth, Shirley Peele and Lou Jean Manning volunteered at Stokes and Pactolus Schools. (5/13)

Dave Malinauskas, Engineer in the Gas Department, presented to Juniors and Seniors at D.H. Conley High School's Career Fair. (5/13)

Greater Greenville Kiwanis
Energy Services Officer Dan Oglesby spoke at the April 30th Greater Greenville Kiwanis meeting. He share information about energy conservation and a description of Energy Services offerings. (4/14)

Contractor Awareness Breakfast
GUC hosted the Contractor Awareness/Damage Prevention Breakfast & Seminar. This annual event is sponsored by the Pitt County Utilities Coordinating Committee (PCUC), along with NC811, CenturyLink, Suddenlink, the City of Greenville and GUC. The goal of the breakfast is for these groups to share information about working safe around utilities. (4/13)

Parade of Homes

Riverside Middle School
Jason Manning, Water Resources Environmental Compliance Coordinator, recently assisted Riverside Middle School with the development of a RAISE grant application. The grant would help fund a program that allows middle school students to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Jason was also the school's science fair judge. (1/13)

Jaycee's Christmas Parade
GUC continued our tradition of participating in the Greenville Jaycee’s Christmas Parade on December 1st. Electric Department employees decorated our bucket truck and float. GUC families enjoyed representing GUC by riding on the float. We also provided a bucket truck for local media. (12/12)

Operation Santa Claus & Holiday Giving
GUC participated in Operation Santa Claus for the sixth year in a row. Employees donated new, unwrapped toys that were distributed by the Salvation Army and the Department of Social Services for children who otherwise might not have any presents under the tree. This project is conducted with the City of Greenville’s Fire-Rescue and Police Department. On December 9, Santa made a special visit to the Engineering Center to hear gift requests from employees’ children and grandchildren.

In addition, some departments joined together to share the holiday spirit. The GUC Express Office adopted a 12-year old girl. The Water Resources Department adopted two families in need. The Finance Department (including Stores) donated to two projects this year: the Kiwanis Christmas at Risk Kids and the Howell Center. The Electric Department held their annual oyster roast to raise funds for two families in need. (12/12)

For the second consecutive year, GUC participated in the Cans for Fans food drive sponsored by the Young Professionals group.

Freeboot Friday
As part of celebrating Public Power Week and Public Natural Gas Week, GUC had a booth at the October 12 Freeboot Friday. Event attendees could spin the prize wheel to get a small gift item and lucky winners got to have a bucket truck ride. (10/12)
